Unique in Canada, Montréal Museums Day is an event in the spirit of International Museum Day, marked all over the world around May 18. The day was created in 1977 by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), an organization that is associated with UNESCO.
Montréal Museums Day was created by the Montréal's museums to help citizens get to know these wonderful institutions. Free admission and free public transit, expanded opening hours, a special activities program and a major media campaign provided by presenting sponsor Quebecor contribute to the day's success, all in the aim of making culture more accessible.
Montréal Museums Day is presented by Quebecor in collaboration with numerous partners, including the Société de transport de Montréal (STM), the day's official public transit partner since 1987. The event benefits from the support of various government agencies, particularly the financial support of The Conseil des arts de Montréal and the Entente sur le développement culturel de Montréal, an agreement between the Ville de Montréal and the Ministère de la Culture, des Communications et de la Condition féminine du Québec.
